Formatting in the editor: the toolbar
The toolbar at the top of the editor bundles all formatting: bold, italic, headings, lists, quotes, links, images, code blocks, tables, call-outs and more. This article walks through every button.
Short answer: the toolbar at the top of the editor holds all the formatting you need. Select text and click a button to apply it, or click a button to add an element at your cursor.
The buttons at a glance
Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough. The first four buttons apply a text style to your selection. Click the same button again to remove the style.
Headings (H1, H2, H3, ...). Click H1 to pick a heading level. A choice appears between H1, H2, H3 and further, so you can give your article a clear heading structure.
Quote. Put a piece of text in a quote block, handy to make something stand out or to show a citation.
Bullet list. A list with bullets, for items without a fixed order.
Numbered list. A list with numbers, for steps or an order that matters.
Link. Add a hyperlink, to an external page or to another help center article. See Inserting a link for the full explanation.
Image. Upload an image and place it in your article. See Inserting an image for the details.
Code block. A block where the text is shown literally: whitespace and formatting stay exactly as you type them. Ideal for snippets of code or examples where the exact display matters.
Horizontal rule. A dividing line across the full width, to visually separate parts of your article.
Table. Add a table. When inserting, you choose how many columns and rows you want. The table appears at your cursor.
Call-out. A box that stands out. Use it to put an important nuance in a coloured panel or a warning in a red one. When inserting, you pick the colour.
Sarrai. This button will become a writing assistant that helps you draft your text. The feature is Coming soon for now and will be finished later.
Markdown view (<>). Shows the markdown of your article as it currently stands. Handy if you're comfortable with markdown notation and prefer to tweak something directly in the code.
Good to know
Your work is saved automatically all the time: at the top you'll see Auto-saved. To go back to an earlier version, use the Versions tab, and with Preview you can see how your article looks to a visitor before you publish.
