Managing sounds and notifications

Notifications are located at the bell icon on the top right.

Short answer: the top right of the bar holds a sound icon and a bell. The sound icon turns the notification sound on or off; the bell opens your notifications.

Step by step

  1. Look in the top right of the bar, next to the presence icon.
  2. Click the sound icon to mute the notification sound or turn it back on.
  3. Click the bell to see your notifications.

What you get notified about

Your bell rings for: a conversation assigned to you, a question from Sarrai in the expert channel, an @-mention in an internal note, and an export that's ready or has failed. An assignment and an expert question show up right away; an @-mention and a ready message for an export can appear up to about 1.5 minutes later, at the next refresh.

Good to know

Muting the sound is handy in an open office or during a conversation, without losing the notifications themselves. You keep seeing those through the bell.

Two quirks of the sound: it only works after you've clicked somewhere on the page (browsers block sound until there's been an interaction), and the first batch of notifications when you open the app never beeps. Only a new notification after that plays a sound.

If your internet connection stalls for a moment, you'll see a message "Restoring realtime updates..." and, if it's out for longer, "Realtime updates are interrupted". Your conversations and counters don't go quiet: they run on a slow background refresh (about 1.5 minutes), just not instantly anymore.
